Myrtle Park, Bingley
A warm welcome from the organisers of Bingley Music Live.
Now in it’s 4th year Bingley Music Live is arguably one of the most intimate and unique indie/pop music festivals in the UK. Intimate because the festival is packed into a natural bowl (anyone that has been to the festival will know just how cosy it is) and unique because there aren’t many music festivals at this level that are funded, organised and managed independently by a local authority.
You wouldn’t be surprised to learn then that the festival is held in one of the local authority’s municipal parks. Myrtle Park is one of Bradford Council’s most picturesque parks located in the heart of the rural town of Bingley (that’s right home of the Building Society with the famous bowler hat). It’s in the shade of the Building Society’s former headquarters where the 25 acre site of Myrtle Park lies. Whilst the building itself is an architectural triumph of what one can achieve with pre cast concrete, soon in the park, and with the stage set against a stunning woodland backdrop, you could forgive yourself for being in the countryside instead of a few miles from Bradford City centre.
Last year in only its 3rd year the festival attracted capacity crowds of 15,000 who flocked in to see the likes of Editors, Calvin Harris, Doves, The Zutons, Ocean Colour Scene and many more. With an admission charge of only £25 it was no surprise that tickets were eagerly snapped up by festival goers as most if not all the acts on display could command that sort of price in their own right. The weekend was also preceded with a free show on Friday night featuring punk legends The Undertones.
Other artists that have performed at Bingley Music Live include:- Reverend & The Makers, V V Brown, The Undertones, The Futureheads, Happy Mondays, Alabama 3, The King Blues, Scouting for Girls, The Automatic, The Charlatans, The Twang, Echo & The Bunnymen and From the Jam.
Bradford Council is enormously proud of this festival and is delighted with its development since it set out 4 years ago. The event is now considered as one of Bradford Council’s 'flagship events' which attracts the single biggest gathering of people in the district exclusively for a music event. In addition to the free event serving local communities and family audiences it also attracts residents and non-residents who make a massive economic contribution on the district.
It’s been quoted that Bingley Music Live is a festival that is going from strength to strength. Whilst it’s nice to receive praise we know there are improvements to be made. Sometimes we get things wrong, you tell us and we listen. From our own observations and your feedback we have implemented improvements that will benefit both the festival attendee and residents in the vicinity of the venue. With your continued support we aim to make Bingley Music Live one of the most attractive and enjoyable music festivals in the UK.
Finally, it goes without saying that without you none of this would be possible. On behalf of Bradford Council the Bingley Music Live team would like to extend a massive thanks for all your support. Long may this event continue.
Have a great festival.
