A word from the organiser
24 July 2008
Having lost countless hours of sleep and waking up in cold sweats at ridiculous hours in the morning I am pleased…NO…delighted to announce the line up for this year’s BML.
Well I can tell you it's been one hell of a roller coaster ride, which started as far back as April, and thankfully it's now come to an end. A provisional line up was virtually signed and sealed in May but unfortunately the headline act we had pencilled in decided they needed a break after Jersey Live the day before Bingley. Oh well……back to the drawing board.
Truth is, the line up has changed several times. There have been bands we’ve approached that have been available and then unavailable when we’ve put in a formal offer. There have been bands with strict exclusivities in their contract, which have prevented them from performing elsewhere; and there have been bands that would have been signed up but due to logistics i.e. not physically been able to get to existing commitments the day after meant they had no option but to turn us down. As a consequence both my band booker and I have aged 10 years in the process. Unfortunately, not lost any weight!
So has it been worth it? Yes of course! We've got a fantastic line up of bands that includes legends Happy Mondays & Echo & the Bunnymen, incredible guest slots, the best in contemporary acts, up and coming touring bands and the best in home grown talent. All this for £12.50, unbelievable value, and we've still managed to keep one day free!
So apart from the line up what's new this year?
The bar - a much improved and faster service can be expected this year and in an effort to promote recycling they're even offering 20p back on all cups returned.
A trading area - well lets try it and see how it goes. There are a few stalls where you can buy a selection of festival goodies or just simply browse.
Catering - taking on board your comments from last year we have included more variety to tickle your taste buds.
The stage - last year we had a fantastic tented structure, which looked great but had its limitations for rigging lights. This year we have an 18m orbit, the biggest stage we've had yet.
Stage manager - unfortunately we don't have our very own legend in his own lunchtime Mr. Roger Nowell. Roger did a fantastic job keeping time last year you could have forgiven him for being an employee of Swiss Rail. Roger whose day job is Paul Weller’s guitar tech is with Paul touring Japan and Australia. He tells me he’s gutted he can’t be with us. Japan/Australia or Bingley......Yeah ok Roger! Although we'll miss him we welcome John Turner into the family. John has 17+ years in the industry and has done more band changeovers than you can shake a stick at. John will be supported by a 10 strong crew who’ll be working swiftly to maintain the tight schedule.
And finally thanks to: The residents around Myrtle Park for putting up with us; The police and various council departments for their continued advice and support; My team, Andy & Nanette; Peter, Helen and James from Marketing and Communications; Mr Stubbs the band booker - the guy who told me big things were going to happen for Duffy, Courteeners, One Night Only and Pendulum before I’d even heard of them; and finally the management and politicians of Bradford Council.
On behalf of Bradford Council and the team involved with BML I hope that you will come along and support the event and above all have a great time.
Andrew Wood
